Where Are Our Leaders?
A commonly heard refrain of late is: "We're lacking good leadership!" Where are the leaders? We have witnessed a glaring failure of leadership from our governments and institutions, including our churches. Institutions we have come to expect to be captained by leaders with wisdom and integrity seemed to have vacant seats. However, amidst this vacuum, when an actual leader appeared he/she stood out like beacons in a dark sea. There have been leaders who emerged with charisma, seemingly authentic, and persuasive – the kind who are skilled at “talking out of both sides of their mouth.” It is indeed difficult to distinguish genuine leaders from "wolves in sheep's clothing." Nevertheless, we have been blessed with some authentic leaders on our show– individuals who stood against tyranny and continue to champion truth and justice. How do we discern true leadership from mere charisma? It's a challenge, given our susceptibility to charismatic orators. While charisma may be seen to be a prerequisite for leadership, we must question whether it masks a desire for power rather than a commitment to service. I recently came across a thought-provoking essay by the late Larry Cropp on the distinctions between "biblical leadership" and conventional leadership. He emphasized three key features: "focus," "purpose (why)," and "end." Cropp highlighted the importance of biblical virtues and aligning motives with purpose, with Jesus serving as the ultimate example. True leaders, he argued, emulate Christ's leadership of service and sacrifice, and seeking to glorify God above all else.
