Is Being Nice Good?

In today's world, there's a prevailing emphasis on niceness that often overshadows the deeper values of genuine goodness and integrity. From everyday interactions to social norms and customs, the importance of being pleasant seems to be how we roll. Against this cultural backdrop, should we not pause and reflect on if we are called to be nice or righteous?   Consider the familiar saying about Canadians – "Canadians are so nice!" What happens to a culture that is rooted in niceness over goodness? Is this niceness healthy? What kind of culture does niceness produce? Look around and ask yourself if what you see is not a tad concerning.   Authentic love transcends surface-level pleasantries; it encompasses consistent kindness, patience, and an unwavering commitment to stand up for what is right, even when faced with challenges. Loving means a commitment to what is good. Loving cares less about niceness and more about righteousness. On the other hand, exploring the origins of the word "nice" reveals something quite different from what its proponents might realize. The etymology of the word indicates a state of “foolishness or ignorance, senselessness, not knowing, stupid, and idiotic,” starkly contrasting with its modern-day usage.  Below we highlight some of the implications and consequences of our woke “nice” culture, from DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) to the lies that prop up a collapsing economy and political system.
