Dearest Friends, I must confess that composing this year's cheery Christmas blessing has been quite a challenge. My diligent assistant, Dominique, has been relentless in urging me to complete it. As I sit down to write, my heart feels heavy.
It is disheartening to see Parliament not illuminated for Christmas this year, while in Dubai, the festivities are grand. Pro-Palestinian protests have arisen in many cities, marked by unsettling, even shocking anti-Semitic chants. Violence has erupted right here in Canada with a Toronto police being threatened and a Syrian refugee attacked by protestors while carrying the Canadian flag. Add to this calls for global jihad echoing through the interwebs. It's intriguing how a tragic event against Israel on October 7 has ignited unprecedented division.
Israel is the very place where Jesus was born to save the world. Israel, where He walked and healed both Jews and Gentiles. Israel, where He sacrificed Himself for our redemption, offering eternal freedom from our sinful humanity. Israel, where the King of Kings and Lord of Lords will one day return.
As I sit here, pondering my emotions, one thing stands out—I yearn for more of Jesus. More of His peace, more of His joy. My prayers have increased, and I've felt the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit filling the void. Even in Israel, people are turning back to God fixing their gaze on Yeshua Hamashiach or the great Adonai. Reports of increased prayer everywhere as the world erupts in turmoil and violence. Who else can we turn to but the incarnate God-made Man?
Perhaps, this is what makes this Christmas truly special. Times are tough, and we need God more than ever before. As I share my thoughts, I sense His love with me and my family. He is also right there with you. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me," as Psalms 23 eloquently puts it.
If you, like me, are aware of the state of the world, you might share my concern that things have never been more uncertain. Yet, here we are, celebrating Christmas once again. "Joy to the World" may be more of an earnest prayer of supplication as opposed to a timely Christmas carol.
As we gather with friends and family, let's cherish the true meaning of this season. May any sadness or worry be replaced with His promise never to leave or forsake us. I wonder if there will be an unexpected gift in the global crisis that will draw us closer to the Rock of all Ages. Will what the devil meant for evil, cause us to be moved to our knees in prayer, thereby making the beauty of the Christmas message even more valuable? Perhaps, along with the appreciation for all those beautifully wrapped gifts, we will find an unexpected deep cry for the Prince of Peace, to rule and reign on Earth truly. Perhaps this is the unforeseen treasure of this unusual Christmas.
From this moment onward, let us cast aside our fears and anxieties and focus on the greatest story ever told. The story that changes everything. A stronghold and mighty tower that we can run to and be safe.
